About Shipton Village

The parish of Shipton Village is a small but thriving community nestled in the heart of the beautiful Cotswold countryside, and is situated 7 miles (11 km) east of the town of Cheltenham. It incorporates the villages of Shipton Oliffe, Shipton Solers and Hampen.

Shipton has a friendly and active community which runs many regular events for our residents. Many of these are operated out of our village hall called the Reading Room.  Shipton has many active clubs, societies and groups which welcome new members.

Shipton is well positioned for travel to London, Birmingham, the south-west and Wales, with easy access to the A40, M4 and M5. We are well served for schools, shops, theatres, cinemas, country pubs, sports clubs and other amenities in the neighbouring towns of Cheltenham, Gloucester and Cirencester.

Shipton is located in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (ANOB). For those wishing to explore the North Cotswolds, we are at the heart of the touristic circuit - an area that includes Bibury, Bourton-on-the-Water, Burford, Chipping Campden, Cotswold Water Parks, Northleach and Stow-on-the-Wold to name just a few.

A tributary of the River Coln flows through the village over two fords and innumerable little water splashes, creating ornamental lakes in the adjoining properties. The Gloucestershire Way long-distance footpath passes through the village.

Most of the buildings in the village are constructed from locally sourced Cotswold stone and other materials sympathetic to the local environment. Some date back to the 18th century and a few even earlier. In recent years there has been an infill of more contemporary  housing as the popularity of the village has grown, but generally speaking, this has been developed mindful of the ANOB and local planning regulations, thereby retaining the natural character and beauty of our village.
